Anna Sohn started off the 23/24 season with her role debut as Mimi in a new production of La Bohème performing alongside Jonathan Tetelman at Oper Dortmund — distinguished as Best Opera Company of the Year at the Oper! Awards 2023. She also appeared as Héléna in the German premiere of La Montagne Noire at Oper Dortmund, where she has been an ensemble member since 2018/2019, as well as in the Donizetti gala Viva la Diva, in which she performed scenes of Elisabetta (Roberto Devereux) and Norina (Don Pasquale). In addition to her Teatro Colón debut, she also appeared in 23/24 at the Aalto Musiktheater Essen as Mimì (La Bohème) and at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden as Liù in a new production of Turandot. Anna Sohn could also be heard in 2023/24 at the Arts Center in Seoul in the soprano solos of the Mendelssohn oratorios Elias and Paulus and in Incheon in Beethoven's 9th Symphony.
Since 2018/19, Anna Sohn has successively expanded her repertoire to include roles such as Cio-Cio-San (Madama Butterfly), Liù (Turandot), Elvira (La Muette de Portici) and Brunhilda in the German premiere of Frédégonde. Frédégonde was broadcast live by Takt1, was awarded “Rediscovery of the Year 2022” in the Opernwelt annual survey, and was nominated in the Best Rediscovered Work category at the International Opera Awards 2022.
In continuous partnership with the Korean National Opera, Anna Sohn has sung numerous premieres: Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro), Juliette (Roméo et Juliette), Violetta Valéry (La Traviata) as well as the title role in Massenet's Manon in 2018 and 2020.
Her previous repertoire also included the title role from Lucia di Lammermoor, Adina (L'Elisir d'Amore), Norina (Don Pasquale), Gilda (Rigoletto), Musetta (La Bohème), Giulietta (I Capuleti e i Montecchi) and Fusako in Henze's Gogo no eiko.
She has made guest appearances at numerous European opera houses and festivals— at the Teatro Regio di Parma, the Festival dei Due Mondi di Spoleto, the Teatro Verdi in Sardinia as well as in Rome, Paris, Avignon, Porto, Luxembourg, Budapest, Mannheim, and Zurich among others.
Anna Sohn studied at Seoul National University before completing her studies with a diploma at the Milan Conservatory in 2005. She also studied with Mirella Freni, Renata Scotto and Ks. Prof. Olaf Bär in Dresden. In 2004, she won the Concurso Internacional de Canto Francisco Viñas, and in 2011, she won second prize at the 61st ARD International Music Competition.
Anna Sohn is a sought-after concert singer and has already performed as a guest at the Tonhalle Zurich, the Teatros del Canal in Madrid, the Esplanade Concert Hall in Singapore, the Auditorium di Milano, the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, the Malmö Music Theater and in Birmingham, Princeton and Washington. Because she has perfect pitch, she is also a desired interpreter of contemperary music. Her most recent sung creation was Marko Nikodijevic’s Abgesang at the Ultraschall- Festival Berlin 2020 with Jonathan Stockhammer conducting the Rundfunkorchester Berlin. Abgesang was recorded by the Wergo label in 2022.
Anna Sohn
The Korean soprano, Anna Sohn, is one of the multifaceted singers of her generation. Raised in Seoul, Korea, she was born into a musical family— both of her parents having professions as piano teachers and her brother being an owner of a piano warehouse, as well as being a piano technician.
In June 2023, she made her successful debut at the Greek National Opera as Cio-Cio-San in a new production of Puccini's Madama Butterfly at the opening of the Epidaurus Festival at Herodium in Athens, which was also recorded for the French broadcasting station Channel Mezzo TV. Her acclaimed debut at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires followed in November 2023, again as Cio-Cio-San in a new production of Madama Butterfly.
For her portrayal of Héléna in the German premiere of Holmès La Montagne Noire at Oper Dortmund, she was nominated as “Best Singer of the Year” in the 2024 annual survey of Opernwelt.
In the 2024/25 season, Anna Sohn appears at Oper Dortmund, in new productions as Violetta Valéry (La Traviata) and Donna Anna (Don Giovanni). She returns to the Greek National Opera as Mimì (La Bohème) and makes her role debut as Marguerite in a new production of Faust at the Metropolitan Opera Seoul.
